Gunung Ngalu Seribu, Sumatra. 2000 Reconnaissance Expedition

Welcome to Kansas! This was one of the things I saw on my first stroll around Padang. Somehow, despite the sign, I didn't think I was in Kansas anymore. I also often saw Kansas cigarettes advertised as America's favorite brand. Who would have known?

We piled most of the gear and people into this truck to head from Padang to Muaro.

This is one of the two boats that we took from Muaro to Moeko Moeko. From there we transported everything to base camp on foot.

This is our first base camp on the banks of the Sungai Quantan.

A cave entrance in the Quantan drainage near our beach base camp.

Looking out of the entrance to Butterfly Cave which was a gaping hole in the cliff across the river from the beach camp. We explored and mapped this short cave on our first day in the field before moving camp up the Sungai Sankiamo drainage to the jungle camp.

John Lane, Jason Hoorn, and Jason Karsokas in the entrance of Butterfly Cave during our survey trip.

A couple of local boys who helped to ferry us and our gear across the river to the Sankiamo.

Hiking up the Sungai Sankiamo from the beach toward our jungle camp.

A creatively constructed kitchen at the jungle camp. Man, one of our porters did most of the handiwork.

Me standing in the well between two buttress roots. This was during our reconnaissance of the upper karst.

John Lane setting up our shelter on our spartan first trip to the upper karst. Minutes later we were hit by a nasty storm which did not let up until morning. You can read the tale in my Sumatra article.

A second recon trip for which we brought a better shelter.
